How can I keep my pet cool in summer?

Today the BBC issued a 'Heat health warning' for vulnerable members of the UK.

Pets are just as prone to overheating as people, so what can you do to help your pet stay cool and happy during a spate of hot weather?

Remember, pavements, astroturf and similar surfaces, can get hot enough to cook an egg. You can gauge the temperature with a quick palm/bare feet test to see if you think the surface is too hot for sensitive paws.

Dogs don't need to be walked several times every day. Once a day can be enough, providing they are entertained throughout the day with other activities. Early morning walks before the sun is too hot are fine. Try to choose shady walks or walks where your pooch can swim if possible.

Other tips:

  • Keep the curtains closed at home providing much needed shade

  • Make sure there's plenty of fresh water on hand

  • If you have a garden try a paddling pool for your pooch

  • For extreme heat you can provide damp towels for your dog to lie on

  • DIY air conditioning - try a fan with a bowl of ice in front of it

And remember, these handy hints can be used for humans too!!

Heatwave treats...

Try a frozen lick mat with yoghurt & fruit for your dog

or

freeze fruit/meaty treats in an ice cube tray as the occasional tit bit.

Prevention is always better than cure....
